Rice

Chico sits at the northern edge of California's rice growing region. Many specialty rices are grown and exported worldwide. One local grower was the first American to be allowed to sell rice in the highly selective Japanese market. Rice fields are fascinating places. In the spring and summer they stay flooded atttracting all manor of wildlife while the rice develops. After harvest in the fall, fields are flooded to provide habitat for millions of ducks and geese along the Pacific Flyway. This series captures the different rice growing seasons in an arts and crafts motif with prairie style borders.
